Review

Pro Dunk’s Gold system is the best selling 60” in-ground hoop on the market right now. A competition standard ½” thickness backboard is the first thing to notice. They boast being one of the only systems with this ½” tempered glass backboard, which gives it an immediately professional feel. The bounce is perfect and you get that authentic sound when making a bank shot.

The Pro Dunk Gold system also has the largest height range on the list. While most competitors (in this price range) settle for the 7.5ft low-point, I like the fact that this system goes down to 5ft. It adds diversity to the product, and it means that people can get creative with the system.

Most people recommend getting professional assistance with set-up, since it is a heavy lugging piece of equipment. That being said, it is possible to set-up with three strong bodies. And once set-up is complete, the Pro Dunk Gold System is backed by a lifetime play warranty. Which brings me to my next point.

I’ve only read one strictly negative review on this product. The individual claims that the whole system is susceptible to rust, not nearly as good as everyone says, and then suggests that there is a good deal of corruption surrounding the manufacturers. Now, perhaps this person received a lemon and is entitled to some bitterness. But in my experience, and in the overwhelming majority of cases, the Pro Dunk Gold system has proven itself to be a leading product in its price range. And further still, it’s backed by a lifetime warranty!

Pros
  • ½’’ tempered glass backboard makes for a professional look and feel
  • Lifetime warranty!
  • Great range, players of all age can join in
  • 60’’ backboard
Cons
  • While most reviews are resoundingly positive, one complaint of premature rusting

Review

Silverback’s In-Ground Basketball System is a high quality piece of equipment. Its steel crank activator is a sturdy, reliable means of adjusting the rim height without worrying that it will come out of place. This can be adjusted for any height between 7.5 and 10ft, which is the standard range.

A 60 inch, tempered glass backboard gives a professional look to the system, which is supported by Dupont powder-coated steel poles. The backboard is lined with protective padding, and there is also an option for pole padding from Silverback for added safety. The board itself is fitted 2.5 feet away from the pole, so that there is plenty of room to move under the hoop and dangers of crashing into the pole are less likely. I personally prefer the tempered glass material to polyethylene, since it gives a more realistic sound and bounce. It’s better for shooters who want to practice for competitive play.

Fitted with Silverback’s anchor bolt mounting system, this is one of the only in-ground systems on my list which can be relocated while still offering the stability of a concrete footing. Backed by a 5 year warranty, weather resistant and using a flexible breakaway rim, it’s also a pretty durable system.

Pros
  • Tempered glass
  • 60′ backboard
  • Movable anchor
  • Adjustable height
  • 5 year warranty
  • Room under the hoop
Cons
  • Not official backboard dimensions
  • Pole padding not inclusive

Review

Pro Dunk Systems are a family-owned and family-run business who have, frankly speaking, been dominating the in-ground hoop system market. I’ve reviewed the Pro Dunk Gold system above (which won our ‘best overall system’ title) and now I’m on to the Platinum. This is the most professional, and expensive, system on the list.

The full-size 72” backboard is made with ½” tempered glass for a totally professional finish. These are the same dimensions used for the NBA. Players who are looking to take their shooting and home practice seriously will really appreciate the quality of this system. Adjustable from 5.5-10ft, it is also ideal for family scrimmages and one-on-one tournaments. I still prefer the traditional Spalding aesthetic style, with its arena-view mounting and classic NBA logo marker. But in terms of practical usage, this full-size, sturdy backboard is the best quality product on my list.

While the Pro Dunk Gold system was subject to some rust-complaints, the Platinum system offers what they call a ‘Rust Armor Package’. This refers to stainless steel hardware, zinc galvanized equipment and an extended corrosion warranty. Once again, I feel I should place a disclaimer. The Amazon product reviews definitely show some strange patterns (almost a hundred single-user five-star reviews) and this has been flagged by fakespot.com as having potentially deceptive reviews. Read into this what you will, I haven’t been able to find a single negative review.

I had a great experiance with this system and enjoyed shooting hoops with it. This is a popular system, and with good reason.

Pros
  • Full-size 72” board
  • ½” tempered glass for professional shooting practice
  • Great range and easily adjustable
  • Extended warranty to protect against rust and corrosive damage, for all weathers
Cons
  • Potentially deceptive marketing strategies (though unverified)
  • Most expensive system on my list

Review

If you like to throw down in your driveway or backyard, you’ll enjoy the 71281 In-Ground System from Lifetime. A shatterproof 52 inch backboard means that you don’t need to be careful while you’re balling out, you can just focus on the game. Steel-framed and made from High Density Polyethylene, the board is made to survive anything you throw at it.

The rim height is adjustable, ranging from 7.5ft to 10ft. These aren’t set heights, either, so you can adjust the hoop to whichever height suits you within that range. The squeeze-handle system is simply to use, though I find it doesn’t give you the same accuracy as some of its competitors. This system from Lifetime is backed by a 5 year warranty, and it also features their signature Slam-it rim technology. That just means you can feel free to lower the rim and dunk away.

Pole and adjustable height system are made with a powder-coated steel which does pretty well in all weather. Otherwise, I will say that the 52’’ size is a little too small for my liking. There’s no need to go the full 72’’ for a beginner’s board, but 52’’ is pretty slim. Then again, practicing with a smaller backboard isn’t always such a bad thing—it just makes for a smaller target!

Pros
  • Shatterproof Board
  • Weather Resistant
  • Adjustable Height rim
  • Official hoop size
  • 5 year warranty
  • Steel-framed Board
Cons
  • Diminished Backboard Size
  • Polyethylene backboard, not realistic shooting
  • Noisy sound off backboard

Who Should Buy

The 54’’ board makes it great for beginners, but since it is ⅜’ tempered glass, the system is also recommended for all home shooters looking to improve their game.Click here for the Goalrilla GS54

Review

Goalrilla’s GS54 system is focused on durability. The lifetime warranty immediately gives some confidence to this fact, but so does the system’s look. A sturdy 5′ x 5′ square-built pole holds the hoop steady, locked in at the base with a movable concrete anchor system. The backboard is made with reinforced, tempered glass and is bordered with both aluminum and steel sections to endure years of rebounds and bank shots.

For me, the sturdy look doesn’t take anything away from the system’s overall class. The thick, square poles which reinforce the backboard might be a bit of an eyesore, but this a system made for performance, not looks. It is also very simple to set up, but you’ll probably need to hire a couple of friends to help carry the pole (which is quite heavy). The great thing about the weight of the system is that the pole has almost zero wobble.

The 54′ inch backboard is a decent size for beginner’s, and I like that Goalrilla sticks with the tempered glass material even for beginner systems. This lets you get used to the realistic feel of more advanced system, while also giving a cleaner, more professional look. Adjustable height options between 7.5′ and 10′ are controlled via Goalrilla’s crank actuator system, which is my preferred method for adjusting.

Pros
  • Durable system with limited lifetime warranty
  • Movable concrete anchor
  • Stable pole with little wobble
  • Tempered glass backboard
  • Dupont coated steel
Cons
  • Blocky, chunky design
  • 54’’ backboard

If you’ve ever watched the NBA, you’ve already seen Spalding hoops in action. A famed name in the basketball world, they have produced an outdoor system worth checking out. The 888 series doesn’t meet competition standards on all points, but it is an all-around high quality hoop.

Spalding “888” Series

Who Should Buy

Tempered glass backboard and an arena view Z-mount give it a distinctly ‘Pro’ feeling. Competitive basketballers and adults will appreciate this more than youth players, despite the 54’’ dimensions.Click here for the Spalding “888” Series

Review

Spalding is one of the leading sports brands in the world. They are the official ball of the NBA and the official hoop system, too. So they know what they are doing when it comes to basketball. The 888 Series is no exception, beginning with the 54” glass backboard system. A crisp NBA logo sits in the bottom left corner, and the four-corner Z-mount is the same set-up used for main court arena basketball. This gives it an immediately professional feeling, which can really inspire a player to strive for that next level. I’m not saying that you need the very best equipment in order to be great, but sometimes just feeling a bit more professional can make you practice like a professional.

The adjustable height system is crank based, running from 7-10ft in infinite increments. Unlike some other systems, I have no fears about dunking on the Spalding 888 Series. There’s a heavy-duty rim, with wraparound support, made specifically to survive impact. So feel free to lower the rim, if needed, and get dunking.

The 3/8” thick tempered glass backboard offers a realistic bounce and gameplay. However, there have been a couple of reports that, post-winter, these backboards are prone to shatter after a few years of use. I have never experienced this, though it’s something to be aware of if you plan on dunking consistently. Spalding offers a limited lifetime warranty which will cover such mishaps.

Pros
  • Professional looking system
  • Backed by the NBA’s official sponsor
  • Tempered glass backboard for perfect rebounds and bank shots
  • 3-4 offset from the pole for plenty of space under the rim
Cons
  • Heavy equipment, might need professional assistance for set-up
  • Reports of backboard shattering after years of use

How To Choose The Best In-Ground Basketball Hoop

The Definitive Buyer’s Guide

in ground basketball hoop buyers guide

Finding The Perfect Net For Your In-ground Basketball Hoop

Are you looking for the best in-ground basketball hoop for your home for fun? Then the hoop size is not too important.

But if you are looking to improve your game, and nail your shots – having the official-sized net can make all the difference to your game.

The official NBA rulebook states that the net of any basketball hoop should be between 1.25 – 15 feet in length. The net should also have over 30 but less than 120 total threads, normally with 9-attachments to the rim.

When you are searching for your in-ground basketball hoop – be sure to check out these details, which should be in the product description.

Nailing Your Bank Shots With The Perfect Backboard

Learning how to perfect your bank shots can be challenging even with the officially sized backboards. The problem is this particular variable may not be completely under your control.

It all depends on the size of your driveway, or the area where you are installing your new in-ground basketball hoop.

If you are trying to perfect your bank shots, you really want to find a backboard the same size as your competition hoops. For example, varsity backboards tend to measure at around 6-feet wide and 3.5 feet tall.

The size of your in-ground basketball hoop really needs to be in relation to the size of the driveway. The last thing you want is to buy a hoop, and not be able to park your car!

Here are a few bullets explaining the relation between basketball hoop size and your driveway:

  • A large driveway (3 car +): You can get away with a 0.5 by 0.5 foot pole, along with a 6 foot backboard comfortably.
  • Smaller (2-car) driveway: Although it may be smaller, you can still edge a 0.4 by 0.4 foot pole in along with a 5 foot backboard.
  • Small driveway (1-car): If space is really an issue, we recommend considering a 0.33 by 0.33 foot pole, and a 4.5 foot or smaller backboard.

Worried backyard/driveway may be a bit to small for an in-ground basketball hoop?

If you want to bring the pro court experience into your home, the ideal space will be roughly 27 feet

Which is huge! We know.

For just blowing the steam you really need a minimum of 9 feet or more for your normal shooting practise. For one on one play, 20 feet will be tight but comfortable enough to have a good time.

The Material Of Your Backboard Matters

Who knew there would be so much to consider when it comes to backboards.

When you decide to invest in the best in-ground basketball hoop for your home, we are guessing you want to ensure it will last for a long-time, right? That is just one of the reasons why the material matters. Of course, it will also slightly affect your game.

The two most popular materials are:

  • Acrylic
  • Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate Backboards

If you want to really make sure your basketball hoop is around for a while, polycarbonate is the best material you can get. They are ideal for low-middle range hoops.

Polycarbonate boards tend to be as tough as nails. Meaning they are durable and are virtually impossible to crack.

Acrylic Backboards

When It comes to acrylic vs carbonate backboards – acrylic is far more popular. Despite the advantages of polycarbonate material.

The best part about acrylic backboards?

If you are trying to improve your game, this material offers less rebound. For those on a tight budget, this is also way cheaper. The only downfall of this material is over time, it could fade into a yellowish color due to the sun.

The Support Pole Is Incredibly Important

he last thing you want is to land a bit too hard on the net during a dunk, and BAM the pole bends, leaving the hoop next to useless for practice.

Or even worse.

The entire thing comes out!

That is why double-checking the support pole is so important. It is the foundation of your hoop. When searching for the best in-ground basketball hoop, there are a few special requirements when it comes to the support pole.

For example, the installation.

Of course, the thicker the pole – the more support it will be able to provide. So, if you are an aggressive player, we suggest finding a thickness suitable for your playstyle. When searching for the best in-ground basketball hoop, you will have three thickness options to choose from:

  • 7 gauge (the thickest, and most durable)
  • 11 gauge (still thick, but 50% thinner then the 7 gauge)
  • 13 gauge (the thinnest of the bunch. Not really ideal for long-term investments)

Some support poles are even adjustable. Which is fantastic if you are investing in the hoop for your family. After all, the teens may like a real challenge. Whereas the little ones would love to actually be able to throw the ball high enough!

The Warranty Should Be A Priority

Remember, as a long-time investment – the warranty is quite important.

Generally, 5-year warranties are offered on low-end products. With longer warranties for the higher-end price range products.

How Do I Install An In-ground Basketball Hoop?

No clue where to get started with installation?

Here is a short guide:

  • Take note of the dimensions of the pole, so you can measure out the hole you will dig.
  • The hole dimensions should be included in the pamphlet as well. Dig a hole according to the specifications. Tool needed?
  • Prepare the concrete, and pour it around the hole around the pole for stability
  • Wait patiently for 2-3 days for concrete to dry.
  • Fit on the bolts to the top of the pole (where you install the hoop)
  • Apply force to these bolts to ensure the pole is secure.
  • Secure the hoop onto the bolts (we recommend getting a friend to help with this step)
  • Fix the rim to the backboard.

For a detailed guide explaining how to do all of this step-by-step, check out this link.

What Is The Average Size Of A Basketball Hoop?

Your typical NBA approved basketball hoop is 15 feet high, and 1.5 feet in diameter.

What Are The Average Dimensions For A Backboard?

The regulations for a blackboard include dimensions ranging from 6 feet wide, and 3.5-feet tall.

What Is The Usual Distance Of The Free-throw Line?

Knowing the free-throw line can help you practice from home with your in-ground basketball hoop. The general free throw line for junior high, high school, NBA, NCAA, and WNBA is 15-feet away. At FIBA level, the free-throw line is 15.09 feet from the point.

What Should I Expect To Pay For One Of The Best In-ground Basketball Hoops?

This depends on what you are looking for. If the in-ground basketball hoop is for your little ones, it could cost as little as $100. But if you are looking for a hoop to rival even the greatest competitions out there, you could be spending up to $2500.

Is It Possible To Remove An In-ground Basketball Hoop And Pole?

Yes! Here is a step by step guide to help you do it:

  • Remove the backboard, and hoop from the pole.
  • Make use of a metal saw to cut the pole in half (this is to reduce the weight of the pole.)
  • Take safety precautions and cut the pole in half again so that only a small portion is sticking out the ground.
  • Take your trusty ol’ hammer and start knocking to remove the dirt and loosen the concrete base.
  • Once the concrete is loose, you should be able to pull it right up.
  • Use your trusty hammer once again to knock the concrete off the pole to make it easier to chuck away.
  • Fill the hole with sand (no one wants a nasty looking hole in their yard!)
